So I just had lunch with Darren where we talked a little bit more about the Spore thing, and he brought up two points:

• They could certainly just include a $10 off coupon for the full game with a purchase of the full Creature Creator. That would defuse the complaints.
• And I hadn't mentioned this earlier because I thought it was obvious, but just in case: releasing the Creature Creator early is their method for filling the Spore pollinator servers with user-generated content, so that when people buy the full game in September there are already many hundreds of thousands of creatures.
